Coming in at number 8 on our list of richest presidents is LBJ and his wife Lady Bird, who made their fortune from the Texas TV and radio stations they owned. They also owned a 1,500 acre ranch in Texas. LBJ became president after JFK was assassinated and is known for helping to push through the Civil Rights legislation Kennedy had worked so hard on prior to his death.
LBJ was the eldest of 5 siblings born to his parents, born August 27, 1908 in Stonewall, Texas. LBJ initially ran for the Democratic nomination in the 1960 presidential election, but after he was unsuccessful, he joined JFK’s ticket as his vice president, and the pair won against Richard Nixon by a narrow margin. After Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, LBJ was quickly sworn into office to assume the presidency. He finished Kennedy’s term and then was re-elected during the 1964 election cycle for a second term. Just one week after Kennedy’s assassination, Johnson issued an executive order to rename NASA’s Apollo Launch Operations Center to the John F. Kennedy Space Center. Johnson was, after much opposition and 75 hours of debate on the Senate floor, able to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in March of 1964. JBJ died at the age of 64, just four years after his second term as president ended, after suffering a massive heart attack in January of 1973 at his ranch in Texas.
